| Cold Case Squad |
| by Joanne Sinchuk |
| |
We’ve all been eagerly waiting for the next Edna Buchanan book, and it’s finally here. It is not only a good one, but it’s the first in a new series. Cold Case Squad is a Miami four person homicide unit that breathes new life into cold cases.
A woman walks into the Miami Police Department’s Cold Case Squad complaining that she keeps seeing her husband everywhere she goes. The problem is, he died in a fire twelve years ago. As Edna says, “Some guys just don’t know when to let go.” The four members of the Cold Case Squad look into this accidental death and find a lot more than they expected.
This book is very different from Edna’s previous books in that it is written in the repertory style: there doesn’t seem to be one protagonist, but rather everyone in the squad is featured. But it is very much like her other books in that she gives a very true sense of Miami and its craziness: the man arrested for practicing dentistry out of his garage, the plastic surgeon operating out of a South Beach hotel room, et al. As she says in Chapter 31, “Only in Miami could a pregnant Miccosukee Indian cave in the skull of a Cuban exile who has snatched a native of Croatia.”
Edna does a nice job of plotting and developing the backgrounds of her new characters. She makes a few references to characters in previous books in the Britt Montero series, which makes me suspect a link to that series somewhere down the road.
Nobody does Miami like Edna. And she proves that here once again. |
