The Ice Maiden
by Sue Wilder

Edna Buchana's Britt Montero series celebrates a decade of excellence with The Ice Maiden.
Britt is a reporter covering the police beat for the Miami News. The "Ice Maiden" is a sculptor and the victim of an old unsolved crime. The Cold Case Squad is the section in the police department responsible for the investigation of the crime. Buchanan does a wonderful job of weaving all three into a seamless story.
Many crime fiction series focus on the main character's personality and quirks, often to the detriment of telling the story. Buchanan's journalistic skills translate into a wonderful ability to tell the story. Although The Ice Maiden is written first person narrative, focus is on the story and not just Britt.
The Ice Maiden is action packed, containing chases, medical examiner scenes and lots of confrontations in dark palces. The location, of course, is Miami, with weather, street scenes and sunsets.
This reader has come to know Britt well since the first book in the series, Contents Under Pressure, was published in 1992. Although she is a realist, she likes to see justice done. She takes the reader into the inner workings of the police department and the detectives who work there.
The Ice Maiden was hard to put down. The reader does not have to read the previous books first. It can be read as a stand alone. However, once read, the reader may want to go back and read other Britt Monteros.
