Elaine Viets is the author of two national bestselling mystery series.
Her Dead-End Job series is a satiric look at the minimum wage world. Elaine and her character, Helen Hawthorne, work a different low-paying job each book. They've been everything from bookstore clerks to hotel maids.
Elaine's second series, featuring Josie Marcus, looks at the pink-collar world of mystery shopping. It debuted with Dying in Style.
Elaine won the Agatha and Anthony Awards.

High Heels are Murder
by Jeannie Fernsworth

Set in photograph-perfect Malplewood, placed somewhere near St Louis, this story sways between Stepford wives and the crass class gambling in Missouri.
Sole sisters, mystery shoe shopper sleuths, and a boyfriend – girlfriend named Jose and Josh are a few of the pun alliterations Viets is so good at. Exchanges such as:
Josie “What kind of person has an affair with a high heel?”
Josh “My mom married a loafer.”
are eyebrow-lifting, curled-lip-smirking funny.
A 9 year olds girl’s dream shop named Dry Ice and a coffee shop named Has Beans make me want to run
to the mall and shop until I drop. Viets could have a second career as a store-naming consultant.
This Tip Toe Thru the Two Lips high heeled romp through the Soft Shoe Showroom world of foot fetishes makes Al Bundy look like the normal guy next door. The busybodies who live next door to the main character’s normal Midwestern value driven- life seem whacked, like they should really live in Florida or maybe California. Our hero, Josie dressed in a changing daily garb of curly, mop-topped wigs and showcase clothing get-ups, shops her way through the days of mystery mall shopping. Retail shoppers beware of what lurks in the store; you never know what is out there to keep you honest.
There are six pages of shoe shopping tips from the author. They include:
Rough up leather soled shoes along a concrete sidewalk so that the slippery soles have some traction.
Shop for shoes at the end of the day because your feet swell as the day goes on.
Men, looking for a good conversation starter, tell her you like her shoes!
