Elaine Viets is the author of two national bestselling mystery series.

Her Dead-End Job series is a satiric look at the minimum wage world. Elaine and her character, Helen Hawthorne, work a different low-paying job each book. They've been everything from bookstore clerks to hotel maids.

Elaine's second series, featuring Josie Marcus, looks at the pink-collar world of mystery shopping. It debuted with Dying in Style.

Elaine won the Agatha and Anthony Awards.

Shop till You Drop
by Joanne Sinchuk

Elaine Viets is one of our best selling authors at Murder on the Beach. It's been a while since her last book in the Francesca Vierling series set in St. Louis, so this new series is much anticipated. And Shop till You Drop is a winner.
Helen Hawthorne lives in the Coronado Tropic apartments in Ft. Lauderdale, and works at a series of dead-end jobs while hiding from the law and her ex-husband. Her current job is at Julianna's, an exclusive dress shop on Las Olas Boulevard where you must ring the doorbell and be screened before admittance is allowed. The head saleswoman, Christina, is the typical South Florida moneyed image: implants, long blonde hair (dyed), plump pouty lips (collagened), sapphire blue eyes (contacts), low rise pants tight enough to show the freckles on her butt, high heels, low neckline, and flat tummy pierced with silver rings. It's like a uniform down here. When I read those lines, I thought, "Elaine has got South Florida to a tee. This is going to be a great book." And it is.
As in most of Elaine's books, the plot is secondary to the characters and Elaine’s fabulous sense of humor. Her comments on South Florida life are dead on. I95 is a dangerous place to drive because it is full of "80's doing 20 and 20's doing 80." Helen's put down to the detective: "Implants don't lower a woman's IQ, detective, just a man's." I love it!
So I am very happy to announce that Elaine is back in full force and top form. I understand that each book in the Dead End Job Series will cover a different job, one in a large national chain bookstore, and one as a telemarketer. Elaine is actually spending time herself working at each of these jobs to research the books. What a writer won't sacrifice for her Art!
But if it produces books like this one, I say, Thanks Elaine.
