Suspicion of Rage
by Joanne Sinchuk

In the seven books of the Suspicion series by Barbara Parker, Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana have been through hell and high water in a relationship that has blown from the hottest of hot to the coldest of cold. But nothing is like this current adventure in Suspicion of Rage.
Gail and Anthony are now married, and preparing for their honeymoon. They plan to travel illegally, to Cuba to attend some family and political matters for Anthony’s family. Anthony wants to show Gail his homeland, and attend his niece’s fifteenth birthday party. The niece just happens to be the daughter of one of the top generals in Cuba. Going along with them will be Gail’s daughter, Anthony’s son and daughter, and Gail’s mother. But before they leave the US, Anthony gets a visit from a congressman and a CIA Agent, who want him to deliver a message to his brother-in-law. This sets off an inter-connected series of events that just keeps building and building, until Barbara delivers her top-notch finale. It really is an impressive story.
Barbara Parker does an excellent job of bringing the reader right into the core of Cuban life. Of course she mentions the scenery and atmosphere, just as other authors have done who are writing about Cuba. But it’s her attention to the details of Cuban life that really bring it alive for the reader. Like the fact that even though they were staying in a home that was by Cuban standards a mansion, there was no toilet seat in the bathroom. Anthony explained that there was a shortage and most Cuban toilets had no seats.
Central in the plot are two dissident writers, Jose Leiva and Yolanda Cabrera, characters who were based on real life people Barbara met in Cuba, who were running a free library out of their home for the Cuban people. Barbara raised money and donated books to this library, and as of this writing, the government had confiscated the books and jailed the caretakers. Makes you appreciate this country all the more. This is probably Barbara’s best work yet. Dutton 2005 1st Ed 1st Printing, Signed 24.95
